FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Ruined your favourite tee? Faded sheets? Found a charity-shop gem that just needs better colour? Here’s everything you need to know about dyeing with Oggi in your washing machine.
General
What is Oggi machine-wash fabric dye? ›
Oggi is a high-performance fabric dye designed for use in your washing machine. You pop it in with your clothes, run a normal cycle, and it re-tints your fabric in one go. No buckets, no faff, just a fresh hit of colour.
Which fabrics can I dye? ›
Oggi works best on natural or plant-based fibres, such as:
- Cotton and cotton blends (with high cotton content)
- Linen and linen blends
- Viscose / rayon and other cellulose fibres
Fabrics with a high synthetic content (polyester, acrylic, nylon, elastane etc.) do not take colour well with standard machine dyes. The more synthetic your garment, the weaker the result.
Can I dye polyester or stretchy clothes? ›
No, not reliably. Oggi is designed for natural fibres. A small amount of elastane (like 2–5% in jeans) is usually fine, but fully synthetic pieces like gym leggings or polyester dresses will barely change.
How much fabric can I dye in one go? ›
Each Oggi dye pack is designed to dye roughly:
- Up to around 600g of dry fabric to a strong, full shade (e.g. one pair of jeans, a duvet cover, a pile of tees).
- Up to around 1.8kg for a lighter, softer shade.
If you want to dye a bigger load to a strong colour, you’ll need to use more than one packpack in the same wash. Don’t split packs across different washes – use full packs together.
Will Oggi cover stains or bleach marks? ›
Sometimes, but not always. Dye is transparent, not paint. Old stains, bleach marks, deodorant patches, oil marks or mystery splashes may still show through – often a different tone to the rest of the fabric.
For best results, start with clothes that are freshly washed and as stain-free as possible.
Can I dye something from dark to light? ›
No. Dye works like layering coloured glass. You can go light to dark, or change the tone of a similar depth colour (e.g. blue to green). To go from dark to light, you would need to remove the original colour with a separate colour-remover product first.
How will the original colour affect the final result? ›
Think of it as colour-mixing:
- White + dye = the truest, clearest version of the Oggi shade.
- Light colours (pale grey, beige) = slightly muted, but still close to the swatch.
- Strong existing colours = mixed result (e.g. blue base + yellow dye = greenish; red base + navy dye = deep plum).
If you want a very specific shade, start as light and neutral as possible.
How to Use Oggi
How do I use Oggi in my washing machine? ›
In short: prepare, dye, wash, rinse. Here’s the step-by-step:
- Weigh your dry fabrics so you know how many packs you need.
- PREPARE: Clean your fabric by washing on a quick cycle.
-
DYE: Open the bottle and place upright on top of the fabric. Wash on a cotton cycle at 40°c. Do not use an eco or water saving cycle.
- RINSE: Wash on another quick cycle with detergent to ensure no residual dye on fabric.
- CLEAN: Remove your fabric. Run a final hot wash with detergent to clean. If there is residual dye on the rubber ring - wipe down with a cloth.
That’s it. Your clothes come out re-coloured and ready to dry.
Which programme should I choose on the machine? ›
Use a full 40°C cotton cycle with a decent wash time – not a quick wash, not a delicate cycle and not a 20°C eco wash.
The dye needs movement, heat and time to fully penetrate the fibres. If the cycle is too short or too gentle, the result can look patchy or weak.
Do I need to add salt or anything else? ›
No extra ingredients needed. Everything required for the dye to fix to your fabric is formulated into the pack. Just follow the instructions on the label.
Will the dye stain my washing machine afterwards? ›
Once you’ve finished dyeing:
- Remove your dyed items.
- Run an empty 40°C (or hotter) wash with detergent.
This clears any dye residue from the drum and pipes. The plastic rubber seal may hold a slight tint with very deep colours, but it doesn’t transfer onto future washes once you’ve done the empty cycle.
My result is patchy / uneven. What went wrong? ›
Common reasons for an uneven finish include:
- Fabric wasn’t evenly damp before dyeing.
- You overloaded the machine or exceeded the recommended fabric weight per pack.
- There were old stains, grease or fabric softener still on the garment.
- You used a short / delicate cycle instead of a full 40°C cotton cycle.
You can sometimes even things out with a second dye run, especially if you’re going darker.
Aftercare & Washing
How should I wash my clothes after dyeing with Oggi? ›
After the dyeing wash and the follow-up rinse wash, treat your item like a new coloured garment:
- Wash with similar colours for the first few washes.
- Use a standard or “colour-care” detergent.
- Avoid bleach and strong stain removers directly on the fabric.
This helps lock in your colour and keep it looking fresh.
Will the colour bleed onto other clothes in future washes? ›
After the initial post-dye rinse, the garment behaves much like any newly bought coloured item. There may be a tiny bit of excess dye in the first few washes, so wash with similar colours rather than whites.
Can I tumble-dry dyed fabrics? ›
Yes. You can tumble-dry once the dyeing and rinse cycles are complete. As with any coloured garment, high heat and very long tumble cycles can speed up fading over time, so air-drying is gentler if you want your colour to last as long as possible.
Will the colour fade over time? ›
All dyed fabrics fade gradually with wear and washing – that’s true of clothes you buy new as well. How quickly they fade depends on:
- How often you wash them.
- The detergents and programmes you use.
- Exposure to sunlight and heat.
To keep Oggi colours looking strong, wash on reasonable temperatures, avoid bleach and very harsh detergents, and don’t leave them drying in direct sunlight for hours on end.
Sustainability & Values
Why dye clothes instead of just buying new ones? ›
Dyeing is resourcefulness in action. Instead of sending faded or stained pieces to landfill and buying more, you’re extending the life of what you already own.
That means:
- Less textile waste.
- Less demand for new fibre, water and energy.
- More creativity and personality in your wardrobe and home.
Is Oggi dye safe to use at home? ›
Yes – when used as directed. Always follow the safety advice on the pack:
- Keep out of reach of children and pets.
- Avoid direct contact with eyes and prolonged contact with skin.
- Don’t inhale dye powder; open the pack gently.
- Store packs sealed and in a dry place.
If you get dye where you don’t want it (skin, surfaces), rinse or wipe promptly with plenty of water.
Practical Bits
Can I use Oggi on curtains, bed sheets and home textiles? ›
Yes – as long as they fit in your washing machine and are made mostly of dyeable fibres like cotton or linen. Always check the care label first.
Heavier items (like large curtains) may need more than one pack or more than one wash to get a deep shade.
Can I re-dye something I’ve already dyed with Oggi? ›
Yes. You can re-dye:
- To go deeper / darker in the same colour family.
- To shift the tone (e.g. from blue-green to more navy, from yellow to a warmer orange).
Just remember: you’re always mixing on top of the colour that’s already there.
My item says “dry clean only”. Can I still dye it? ›
We don’t recommend it. “Dry clean only” usually means the fibre, the construction or the trims won’t tolerate machine washing – let alone a full dye cycle. If you choose to experiment, it’s at your own risk.
I’m not sure if my fabric will dye. What should I do? ›
If possible, cut off a tiny hidden piece (from a seam allowance or inside hem) and run a mini test by hand. Alternatively, remember this rule of thumb:
- Natural fibre? Likely yes.
- High synthetic content? Likely no or very muted.
- Mixed fibre? Somewhere in between.
